{"id":1092,"date":"2014-08-26T14:00:15","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T12:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/?p=1092"},"modified":"2014-08-26T11:18:55","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T09:18:55","slug":"jallas-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/08\/26\/jallas-cemetery\/","title":{"rendered":"Jall\u00e0\u2019s Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hi there!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s walk might seem a bit macabre, but you should not think so, because we are in a very important place for Waldenses\u2019 history and identity: we are at the Jall\u00e0\u2019s Cemetery, in Luserna San Giovanni (To).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1083\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1083 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/14-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"The inside of the cemetery with its typical arcades\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The inside of the cemetery with its typical arcades<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You are probably wondering why I decided to take you in a cemetery &#8230; Here, among bushes and gravestones, we\u2019ll learn together a bit of history.<br \/>\nYou have to know that in the past, with the edicts of 1618 and 1620 issued by King Charles Emmanuel 1st, it was determined that Waldenses could not bury their dead people in cemeteries that already used to house the graves of Catholic people, but that they should do it in some isolated places, away from the roads and not delimited by hedges or walls.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1084\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1084\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1084 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/24-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"Some tombstones are so old to collapse under their own weight! \" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1084\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some tombstones are so old to collapse under their own weight!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In San Giovanni, the Waldensian community was forced to buy a field in order to celebrate their funerals.<br \/>\nThe place we are in today was chosen because it seems, although there are no reliable sources, that already in the 16th century some Waldensians were buried here.<br \/>\nConsider that, since the edicts did not allow to build fences around Waldensian cemeteries, it could somewhen happen, in the countryside, that cattle would graze through the graves!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1085\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1085\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/33.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1085 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/33-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"In the past, these metal fences were used to keep away from the graves grazing animals\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the past, these metal fences were used to keep away from the graves grazing animals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After persecutions of 1686 the number of dead people had increased quite a lot, and after that the Glorious Return repopulated the Valley with new Waldenses\u2026 The church of San Giovanni needed to enlarge the cemetery, in order to house all of the tombs, but this caused discontent among the inhabitants of the Jall\u00e0 township (the name of the hamlet gives its name to the cemetery); people round there, as well, had already complained that the cemetery should be moved somewhere else. Go along into Beckwith st. and after 350 meters turn left onto Jall\u00e0 road.
