That&#8217;s why people from Ror\u00e0 are also called \u201c<em>Brusap\u00e8re<\/em>\u201d (\u201cstone burners\u201d), \u2018cause most of them used to work in the many kilns located round here where lime was produced!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1231\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1231\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1231 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_1.jpg\" alt=\"Here's the ancient furnace which gives its name to this hamlet \" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_1-604x400.jpg 604w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_1-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&#8217;s the ancient furnace which gives its name to this hamlet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lime is a material known and used since ancient times, and it is obtained by baking (at a very high temperature) limestone (which is a very common rock in the valley of Ror\u00e0).<br \/>\nOnce mixed with water the stone melts and it can be used like cement&#8230; Its making requires a long processing that was carried out in several places\u2026 just like the place we are in today!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1232\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1232\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1232 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_2.jpg\" alt=\"I guess, with the fire lit, I could not stay here!\" width=\"530\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_2.jpg 530w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_2-398x600.jpg 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I guess, with the fire lit, I could not stay here!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not far from here calcareous rocks were mined; in addition to the stones, Brusap\u00e8re had also to carry over their shoulders or by mule many and many bundles of wood from nearby forests. Stones were then made into small pieces and put into the furnace, and after that the fire was lit. The cooking process required 4 to 7 days&#8230; But even more time was needed to be able to take the stones from the furnace, since lime could also take two weeks to cool down!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1233\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1233 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_3.jpg\" alt=\"Here the stones were cooking\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_3-604x400.jpg 604w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fournais_3-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here the stones were cooking<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mules were then loaded up again and taken downhill through mountain trails in order to deliver lime. At the end of 19th century a road going from Pontevecchio to Ror\u00e0 was built, and transportation became much easier: using carts a lot more material could be carried in the plains. Consider that lime coming from Ror\u00e0 was known and appreciated for its peculiar strength even in Turin!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get here<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>leave Luserna San Giovanni taking the Provincial Road 162 and follow the signs to Ror\u00e0 that will take you up to the village. Go through the village and, following Fornaci street, after a bit more than 1 km you will find, on your right, the Fournais.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi there!
