{"id":1315,"date":"2015-02-13T14:00:11","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T13:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/?p=1315"},"modified":"2016-02-11T23:54:53","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T22:54:53","slug":"featured-who-are-the-waldensians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2015\/02\/13\/featured-who-are-the-waldensians\/","title":{"rendered":"Special: Who are the Waldensians?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello guys, welcome back!<br \/>\nOur daily adventure is going to be a bit special, \u2018cause I want to talk to you about the Waldensian movement and about the celebration that will be commemorated next Tuesday\u2026<\/p>\n<p>On February 17th, in fact, all of Waldensian communities, in particularly in the valleys near Pinerolo, celebrate an important religious and civil anniversary: <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">the granting<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">civil and political rights<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that will lead<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to freedom of worship<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, the evening before February 17th great <a title=\"Stall\u00e8 \u2013 Luserna San Giovanni\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/02\/14\/stale-luserna-san-giovanni-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">bonfires<\/span><\/a> are lit, with people gathering around the fire, singing and praying to remember this important event. The day after, in the Valleys all of shops, offices and schools are closed, and people use to attend the cult (some women also put on<span style=\"color: #008000;\"> <a style=\"color: #008000;\" title=\"Traditional Waldensian dress\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/04\/11\/816\/\">traditional clothes<\/a><\/span>) and, after the cult, they use to meet together to eat the typical Waldensian dishes, such as the \u201c<a title=\"Stall\u00e8 \u2013 Luserna San Giovanni\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/02\/14\/stale-luserna-san-giovanni-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">supa barbetta<\/span><\/a>\u201d (a typical soup from the Valleys).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1307\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1307\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1307 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1.jpg\" alt=\"Here I am at the bonfire of last year in the township of Stall\u00e8 (Luserna San Giovanni, To)\" width=\"1000\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1-604x400.jpg 604w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1-825x546.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here I am at the bonfire of<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" title=\"Happy XVII February!\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/02\/17\/happy-xvii-february\/\"> last year<\/a> <\/span>in the township of Stall\u00e8 (Luserna San Giovanni, To)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Right on February 17th, 1848, King Charles Albert, who ruled these lands, wrote the <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" title=\"Stall\u00e8 \u2013 Luserna San Giovanni\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/02\/14\/stale-luserna-san-giovanni-2\/\">Patent Letters,<\/a><\/span> in which the King granted to Waldensian people the <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">civil and political rights<\/span><\/span>; before that date, in fact, those who did not follow the religion of the Kingdom would be persecuted.<br \/>\nIn the past, laws forced subjects to profess the same religion of their king: those who opposed it were considered outlaws and could be punished in various ways, sometimes with taxes, with imprisonment and, in some dark periods, even with sentence to death.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1308\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1308\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1308 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"The \u201cGueiza d\u2019la Tana\u201d (Angrogna, Turin) is a natural cave where it is said that Waldensian people from the Valleys round here used to meet to officiate \u2013 in secret \u2013 their cult\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-397x600.jpg 397w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-768x1160.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-546x825.jpg 546w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The \u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" title=\"Guieiza d\u2019la Tana \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/08\/25\/gueiza-dla-tana-2\/\">Gueiza d\u2019la Tana<\/a><\/span>\u201d (Angrogna, Turin) is a natural cave where it is said that Waldensian people from the Valleys round here used to meet to officiate \u2013 in secret \u2013 their cult<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Waldensians, in fact, are not part of the Catholic Church (unlike the biggest part of the Italian population), but they are Protestants, since in 1532 &#8211; during a meeting held in these valleys, in <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" title=\"Chanforan \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/08\/29\/chanforan-2\/\">Chanforan<\/a><\/span> \u2013 they decided to be part of the Protestant Reformation.<br \/>\nThis reform has its origin in the protest against the Catholic Church of the 16th century, a time when the clergy lived in luxury and used to meddle in political affairs: Protestants were the ones that opposed to this situation, pushing for a comeback to a religion closer to the one described in the Gospels.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1309\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1309 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/3-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"In Chanforan (Angrogna, Turin) Waldenses decided to join the Protestant Reformation: this monument stands here as a memory of that event.\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" title=\"Chanforan \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/08\/29\/chanforan-2\/\">Chanforan<\/a><\/span> (Angrogna, Turin) Waldenses decided to join the Protestant Reformation: this monument stands here as a memory of that event<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Waldensians are Christians who, since the Middle Ages, have decided to follow the example of the French merchant <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" title=\"Valdesina goes on holiday! Lyon\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/12\/19\/valdesina-goes-on-holiday-lyon\/\">Valdo<\/a><\/span>: he decided to give up all his possessions and live in poverty, as the first Christ\u2019s disciples, by following what is written in the Bible.<br \/>\nWhat do Waldenses believe in? During the function only two sacraments (the ones described in the Bible) occur: <a title=\"Traditional Waldensian dress\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/04\/11\/816\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Baptism<\/span><\/a> (celebrated when kids are very young or when they are 16) and the Holy Communion; for the same reason, the only religious recurring events are Christmas and Easter; those who are called to carry out the pastoral service (the shepherds, who normally administer Sunday worship) do not receive a special power that distinguishes them from other members. They have faith in one God, who created the world and that is the Father of all humanity and lives among human beings through his Spirit, gathering them all together in an unique Church (formed by all who believe in Him and who have been baptized) . The word of God is written in the Bible, that is testimony of the faith of the people of Israel and of the first Christian community. Jesus had a very strong personality and, as reported by His disciples in the Gospels, He was able to work extraordinary miracles. Since He was announcing a new message of freedom, He incurred the hatred of the leaders of the people, and for this He was crucified. After three days He resuscitated, showing that He was God\u2019s Son.
