It dates back to the early days &#8211; maybe around the years 1555\/56 \u2013 of the construction of this very simple building with no bell tower, no altar nor images inside it, but that only used to give shelter to people gathered in order to listen to worship&#8230; Actually, for people coming from outside the town it looked like just a big bart (which in Piedmontese is called \u201cciabot\u201d and, from there, \u201cCiabas\u201d)!<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2405\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/chabas_4-e1486073689657.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2405 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/chabas_4-e1486073689657.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/chabas_4-e1486073689657.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/chabas_4-e1486073689657-604x400.jpg 604w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/chabas_4-e1486073689657-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/chabas_4-e1486073689657-825x546.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It looks like you&#8217;ve already been here? Well done, guys, you&#8217;re right! We passed here long ago walking along the course of <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/08\/28\/bealera-peyrota-peyrot-luserna-san-giovanni-2\/\">Bealera Peyrota<\/a>!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This unlucky temple was destroyed many times (think that even in the period of <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/09\/27\/gianavella-2\/\">Piedmontese Easters<\/a> it was burned twice!) but around it life was intense: for many years it had been the only temple of the Community of <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2015\/05\/08\/san-giovanni-luserna-san-giovanni-2\/\">San Giovanni<\/a>, and in the days of worship there used to take place also the open-air market, since the reputation of the shepherds who officiated the cult here would attract many people from a distance&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2394\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2394\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2394 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_2-397x600.jpg\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_2-397x600.jpg 397w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_2-768x1160.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_2-546x825.jpg 546w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_2-825x1246.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2394\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside the temple 13 famous people of the time are buried, which were all foreign Protestants that could not be buried in Catholic cemeteries of the Valleys.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/06\/20\/943\/\">1686<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2015\/02\/13\/featured-who-are-the-waldensians\/\">Waldensians<\/a> decided, at a meeting that was held right here, if choosing to fight against Savoy to defend their freedom, or going into exile beyond borders&#8230; one month later the temple was set on fire again by the troops of the Duke of Savoy.<br \/>\nIn 1806 it was then built the temple of Bellonatti and (since there was a law imposing that the number of temples in the Valleys could not increase) the Chabas was abandoned, its interior looted and used as storage.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2395\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2395\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2395 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_3-397x600.jpg\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_3-397x600.jpg 397w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_3-768x1160.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_3-546x825.jpg 546w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chabas_3-825x1246.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Only in 1868 the temple was restored and it is now used in alternation (even if less often) with the one of San Giovanni.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>How to get here:<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>leave the provincial road 161, that connects Pinerolo to the Pellice Valley, at the roundabout in Pralafera, and turn right in Masel Road; cross the intersection and continue straight onto the Provincial Road 163. After less than a mile you will find yourself surrounded by meadows and on your left you can see the great pyre for the bonfire of <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/02\/14\/stale-luserna-san-giovanni-2\/\">Stall\u00e8<\/a> (but only during in the period of February!)&#8230; continue for 300 m and turn left at the next crossroad -to Angrogna- and soon in the fields immediately\u00a0 below the street, you will see the church of Chabas, marked by a yellow panel.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello!
