{"id":2890,"date":"2018-03-02T14:00:14","date_gmt":"2018-03-02T13:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/?p=2890\/"},"modified":"2018-03-02T11:02:13","modified_gmt":"2018-03-02T10:02:13","slug":"2890","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2018\/03\/02\/2890\/","title":{"rendered":"Special: the first inhabitants of the Waldensian Valleys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hello!<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today I want to take you for a walk more through times rather than through the Valleys, and I would like to tell you about ancient Europe, so much that it dates back to the Neolithic and the Copper Age (from 6500 to 3500 BC), when writing did not exist yet and most metals were not known.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We know that in that period <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2015\/12\/18\/featuring-the-waldensian-valleys\/\">Waldensian Valleys<\/a> were already inhabited, or at least hung out, by an ancient community that left us as heritage many legends and &#8211; above all &#8211; engravings on rocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1830\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1830\" style=\"width: 825px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/copertina.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1830 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/copertina-825x550.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/copertina-825x550.jpg 825w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/copertina-604x403.jpg 604w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/copertina-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/copertina-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/copertina-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 825px) 100vw, 825px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/2016\/03\/11\/san-germano-chisone-peira-eicrita\/\">Peira Eicrita<\/a> of San Germano Chisone <span lang=\"en\">it is an example of the prehistoric past of our valleys (although these incisions are more recent than the period I&#8217;m talking about today)<\/span>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some researchers believe that at that time there were flourishing cities very distant from each other, located near the rivers and without fortifications because it was a period of great peace. Artisans excelled in the production of ceramics, and the processing of known metals (gold, silver and copper) was destined for jewels and religious objects.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Population was probably devoted to a single female goddess and religion (interpreted as a relationship with nature) was at the center of daily life: the cycle of life, death and rebirth was celebrated in the image of the Goddess, a procreative force.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2885\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2885\" style=\"width: 547px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pansa_roca.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2885 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pansa_roca-547x825.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"547\" height=\"825\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pansa_roca-547x825.jpg 547w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pansa_roca-398x600.jpg 398w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pansa_roca-768x1159.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pansa_roca-825x1245.jpg 825w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/pansa_roca.jpg 1017w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The mysterious \u201cPansa d&#8217;la Roca\u201d (belly of the rock) in <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2016\/12\/16\/legend-the-devil-and-the-basket-val-dangrogna\/\">Cavour<\/a> is a rock engraving facing east that seems to represent a pregnant belly, but unfortunately nothing more is known about it!<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thanks to the discovery and study of ancient burials we know that the society was peaceful and matrilineal, the role of men and women was equal since there is no difference among men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s graves. Moreover, dead people did not have a \u201cfuneral supply\u201d to carry in the afterlife because conception of time was cyclical: tombs were oval, like eggs or anyway of comfortable shapes, and symbols of regeneration and of vivifying water were engraved on them (like cupels, concentric circles with a central point, concentric arches, twisting snakes, moon cycles).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was thought that a barrier of water existed between this world and the other (which was believed to be at the west), which could be crossed by boats&#8230; And life after death was thought as pleasant and desirable.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-777\" style=\"width: 825px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-777 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/22-825x547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/22-825x547.jpg 825w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/22-604x400.jpg 604w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/22-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/22.jpg 1535w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 825px) 100vw, 825px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span lang=\"en\">In the village of Torre Pellice there are no rock engravings but in the memory of someone still resides the memory of the procession that carried the puppet of an old woman, representing the dying winter season: the ceremony took place on March 21 and ended with the bonfire whose &#8220;la veia&#8221; was thrown<\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/03\/21\/santa-margherita-torre-pellice-2\/\">read the post here<\/a>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The main theme of ancient religion was the mystery of birth and death, of the renewal of life not only of human beings but of all the earth and nature: without the fertility of earth, human beings&#8217; life was in danger. Goddess&#8217; signs were femininity, Moon, water&#8230; all elements found in legendary <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2017\/11\/10\/the-fairies-hole-pertus-dle-fantine-rora\/\"><i>fantines<\/i><\/a> (fairies).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But there are also animal symbols that have survived a little in all the valleys: the snake as a sign of vital energy, which coils can represent the sun, the moon or the eye. If venomous, it is a manifestation of the goddess of death&#8230; do you remember the legend of the <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/12\/06\/the-snake-fairy-prarostino-piani\/\">Serpent Fairy<\/a>?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Goddess&#8217; image is also associated with a bird or an aquatic bird&#8230; just like the mysterious beings of the legend of <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/07\/04\/prali-ribba-2\/\">Lake Carrot<\/a> in Prali.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The bear \u2013 instead &#8211; was recalled at the moment of childbirth (who knows why in the unconscious the of <a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/08\/28\/toumpi-dl-oursa-2\/\">Toumpi<\/a> remained a female bear and not a male bear?).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the end, the sow was a representation of fertility&#8230; perhaps in its honor was depicted much, much more recently, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2017\/03\/03\/the-tiny-pigs-virgin-mary-villar-perosa\/\">Vergin Mary with the pig<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If I intrigued you with these ancient suggestions, continue to follow my adventures: the valleys are full of engraved rocks waiting to tell us their stories!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello!
