It is located on a plot that once belonged to Colonel John Charles Beckwith.<br \/>\nWe already know that Colonel Beckwith founded primary <a title=\"Odin-Bertot School \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/08\/30\/scuoletta-odin-bertot-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">schools<\/span><\/a> throughout the whole valley, but <a title=\"Torre Pellice \u2013 Waldesian Quarter\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/08\/27\/torre-pellice-waldesian-quarter\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">many other works<\/span><\/a> were achieved thanks to him.<br \/>\nHe was born in Canada in 1789 by an English family and at the age of 14 he joined the army; in 1815 he lost a leg on the battle field because of a cannonball. A few years later, in 1827, while reading a book he learned about <a title=\"Featured: Who are the Waldensians?\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2015\/02\/13\/featured-who-are-the-waldensians\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Waldensians<\/span> <\/a>and he decided to move to Italy to increase his knowledge about them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-296\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-296\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_3.jpg\" alt=\"The construction built by inhabitants of Martel\" width=\"1000\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_3.jpg 1181w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_3-604x400.jpg 604w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_3-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_3-825x546.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The construction built by inhabitants of Martel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When he arrived in Piedmont what he saw was a landscape made of small hamlets perched on mountain slopes, consisting of dark huts, dirty stables, with many malnourished children scampering in the streets with no shoes on.<br \/>\nColonel Beckwith financed the building of the little schools, he brought educational material from England and he established two comprehensive schools.<br \/>\nHe contributed to the building of the Waldensian College high school and of a Hospital in Torre Pellice.<br \/>\nHe paid postgraduate studies in Switzerland to the ones who wished to become teachers.<br \/>\nHe cared also about the construction of few Waldensians temples.<br \/>\nIt is said that the wooden-legged Colonel used to get to all of the construction sites hardly limping, but always impeccably dressed in his silk scarf and military decorations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_294\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-294\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-294\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_1.jpg\" alt=\"Fresh water continuously gushing from the source\" width=\"1000\" height=\"663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_1.jpg 1509w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_1-604x400.jpg 604w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_1-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/beckwith_1-825x547.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fresh water continuously gushing from the source<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Colonel Beckwith&#8217;s properties were inherited by his daughter Charlotte, who decided to donate the fountain at Martel to the inhabitants of that region, so that they could freely use it.<br \/>\nThe small building you can see was made by residents in 1929, in memory of Charlotte Beckwith two years after her death, and the following passage from the Bible is written on it: <em>\u201cEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.\u201d<\/em> (John 4:13-14)<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get here:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>from Provincial Road 161, between Torre Pellice and Luserna San Giovanni, at the roundabout take the road to Angrogna and follow the main road up to the branch locations in Bruere. Turn right and after 2 km you will arrive in the village of Martel. As soon as you reach the hamlet, you can see on the right the signs for the fountain that indicate the path in the woods.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello kids!
