{"id":727,"date":"2014-02-21T14:00:50","date_gmt":"2014-02-21T13:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/?p=727"},"modified":"2015-04-21T12:30:40","modified_gmt":"2015-04-21T10:30:40","slug":"the-temple-of-pradeltorno-angrogna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/02\/21\/the-temple-of-pradeltorno-angrogna\/","title":{"rendered":"The temple of Pradeltorno &#8211; Angrogna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi guys!<br \/>\nToday we are back in Angrogna Valley, more precisely in <a title=\"Pradeltorno \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/08\/25\/pradeltorno-angrogna-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pradeltorno<\/span><\/a>, an important site of <a title=\"Featured: Who are the Waldensians?\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2015\/02\/13\/featured-who-are-the-waldensians\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Waldensian<\/span> <\/a>history.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m gonna tell you the history of its temple, which was built in 1876, and which is located on the rock that gives its name to the village, overlooking the town from above. \u2026actually, have you ever wondered about the curious name of this place?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_721\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-721\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-721 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/13-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"The temple of Pradeltorno rules the Angrogna Valley\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The temple of Pradeltorno rules the Angrogna Valley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some say that \u201cPradeltorno\u201d, (also known as Pr\u00e8 dar Tourn), could mean &#8220;the meadow of the hairpin turn, of the route, of the return&#8221; or &#8220;the field of a Tourn&#8221; (which is a typical surname from Waldensian Valleys). Many English travelers who passed through here in the 19th century, however, wrote in their journals &#8220;Pra del Tor&#8221;, and this confirms the hypothesis of the term &#8220;tor&#8221; as \u201crock\u201d.<br \/>\nOnce here, we can try to imagine a large meadow dominated by a huge rock and, not too far, the village &#8230; Well, It is not very different from what we see today!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_722\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-722\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-722 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/23-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"We can see a mountain landscape outside the windows\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/23-397x600.jpg 397w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/23-546x825.jpg 546w, https:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/23.jpg 662w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We can see a mountain landscape outside the windows<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Talking about British travelers in the valleys\u2026 in 1871, the Anglican reverend (and traveler) John Napper Worsfold was surprised that, in such a stronghold of resistance to persecution as Pradeltorno, there was not a Waldensian church. The<a title=\"Coulege dei Barba \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/08\/27\/73\/\"> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Coulege dei Barba<\/span><\/span> <\/a>had been no longer used for a long time, because shepherds &#8211; after the <a title=\"Chanforan \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/08\/29\/chanforan-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Chanforan<\/span> <\/a>edict of 1532 &#8211; had begun to study in the Protestant French Academies.<br \/>\nIn the small village there was just a little chapel dedicated to Virgin Mary, but the nearest Waldensian temple was a few hours\u2019 walk away from. Even the \u201c<a title=\"Odin-Bertot School \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2013\/08\/30\/scuoletta-odin-bertot-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Beckwith school<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u201d was falling into pieces&#8230; that\u2019s why Worsfold decided to intervene.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-723\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/33.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-723 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/33-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"The stove of the temple is famous for having very long tubes\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The stove of the temple is famous for having very long tubes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Reverend was sustained, as well, by the Waldensian minister Etienne Bonnet, who wrote, in 1875, a newspaper article in which he claimed not only that the school had to be restored and that a temple should be built in memory of Waldensian heroes fallen there, but he also remembered that inhabitants from pastures at high altitudes needed an accessible House of Cult.<br \/>\nIn 1873 Worsfold wrote and published in England a book called The Vaudois of Piedmont: in this book he recounted his journey in the Waldensian Valleys. With his book he contributed to raising funds for the project. 53 families from Pradeltorno also contributed, and they all eventually raised all of the needed money: the temple could be built!<br \/>\nThe first stone was laid in the summer of 1876 and the building was inaugurated on September 3rd, 1877. Inside the temple there are some rooms to host the school and to work as an accommodation for the teacher.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-724\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/42.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-724 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/42-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"The facade of the temple has not always been so...\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The facade of the temple has not always been so&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The temple was built in an almost Gothic style, which was an unusual choice in Waldensian Valleys, but it was very appreciated by British visitors. You have to know that, usually, architecture of Waldensian temples is very simple, with very few decorations and no frills. Through the years, just one big change was made: at the beginning the front of the building was painted in yellow and red, but maybe these colors were a bit too bright for shepherds and peasants from Angrogna Valley\u2026 that\u2019s why the temple was later repainted in white and gray!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get here<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Reach <a title=\"Pradeltorno \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/08\/25\/pradeltorno-angrogna-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pradeltorno<\/span> <\/a>(district of Angrogna) coming from Torre Pellice and, once you leave the Provincial Street 161 entering the town, take Generale Martinat Street right before the bridge on Angrogna creek.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Go through the whole street and you\u2019ll reach the hamlet known as Chiot dl&#8217;Aiga, then take the road on your left (Pradeltorno Street) that takes to the valley bottom.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Once in Pradeltorno, park your car and walk along the street between the cemetery and you get the Waldensian temple.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi guys!
