You don\u2019t know who a \u00a0\u201cBarba\u201d is, do you?!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/coulege_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-80 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/coulege_2-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"The entrance to the Coulege\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The entrance to the Coulege<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ok, I\u2019ll explain: in Romance language (which is the language French comes from, and that was spoken also in these valleys) \u201cBarba\u201d means \u201cuncle\u201d\u2026 in Piedmontese dialect, as well, we use to call our uncles \u201cBarba\u201d!<br \/>\n\u201cBarba\u201d of the past were really brave people: in 1400, long before America was discovered,\u00a0 they used to travel in groups of two across Italy and Europe, pretending to be merchants or pilgrims.<br \/>\nWhy did they do this? Good question!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/coulege_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-81 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/coulege_3-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"The doorway of the Coulege\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The doorway of the Coulege<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They were \u201ccolporteurs\u201d, which means that they used to go and visit groups of worshipers, house-to-house, in order to bring \u2018em Protestant Bibles written in languages other than Latin.<br \/>\nEarlier Bibles were written in German, while in these valleys people needed to have Bibles written in French, because that was the main language spoken among people who lived here.<br \/>\nAt that time it was forbidden to have a Bible not written in latin, and if in a house a non-latin Bible was found, the whole family could risk arrest .<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83\" style=\"width: 397px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/coulege_5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-83 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/coulege_5-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"The landscape of the Angrogna Valley seen from a window of the \u201cCoulege dei Barba\u201d\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The landscape of the Angrogna Valley seen from a window of the \u201cCoulege dei Barba\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2026think of what could have happened if \u201cBarba\u201d had been caught with their bags filled with translated Bibles! That\u2019s why they had to travel disguised\u2026 in order not to be caught!<br \/>\n\u201cBarba\u201d were educated people, they could read (at that time only very few people were able to do it, because there were no schools for children like we have today) and they learned to do it here at the Coulege, where they practiced reading the Bible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get here:<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>re<\/em><em>ach <a title=\"Pradeltorno \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/08\/25\/pradeltorno-angrogna-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pradeltorno<\/span> <\/a>(district of Angrogna) coming from Torre Pellice and, once you leave the Provincial Street 161 entering the town, take Generale Martinat Street right before the bridge on Angrogna creek.<\/em> <em>Go through the whole street and you\u2019ll reach the hamlet known as Chiot dl\u2019Aiga, then take the road on your left (Pradeltorno Street) that takes to the valley bottom.<\/em> <em>Once in Pradeltorno, park your car and walk along the street between the cemetery and the <a title=\"The temple of Pradeltorno \u2013 Angrogna\" href=\"http:\/\/valdesina.it\/en\/2014\/02\/21\/the-temple-of-pradeltorno-angrogna\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Waldensian temple<\/span><\/a>. <\/em><em>Climb up to Coulege following the wood panels.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ciao!
