Legend: Il Peirun – Bagnou, Angrogna

The story I’m telling you today could make you rich, so you have to listen it cautiously!
It’s said that above the Bagnou hamlet, in Angrogna, Val Pellice, there’s an hidden treasure.

From the unpaved road which goes to Alpe Crëvlira, near Bagnou, you’ll see a big rock with the shape of an “L” which is called Peirun, literally “big stone”.

Here’s the Peirun seen from the road

It is likely that this big rock raised the curiosity of men since the dawn of time: on the Peirun you can see, still today, signs drawed on the lower part of it by primitive men. Is’s said that once upon a time in this place were celebrated rituals dedicated to the fertility and celebrations for the arrival of the spring. Probably, it’s because of these habits that in this place many legends were issued.

Don’t forget to enjoy the panorama!

It’s said that in Saint John’s Eve, at Peirun happen strange and misterious things.
Approaching to the stone just at the sunset you should see a glare. Well, people say that the stone flourishes of magical lights and that on its base you can find a treasure!

There isn’t a path to reach it, but just a steep hill

The legend narrates that some men went to the big rock with a book of magic formulas with them, searching for the mythical treasure. One of them read the magical book, while the others dug under the Peirun. After a few, they saw the strange luminescence we talked before and started to dig with a renewed enthusiasm.
But at a certain point, the ill-fated men encountered an unwanted suprise and even started to hear many loud bangs, so were forced to run away. The day after, the men came back to the stone to retrieve their pickaxes and shovels, but near the Peirun they saw that no mark of the deep hole they dag the day before searching for the treasure remained!

Nobody knows who is the treasure’s keeper. Someone says that they are the fantine who live in the mountains. And you? What do you think?

I searched far and wide, but… but I couldn’t find a single trace of the treasure!

How to get here
From Pinerolo take SP161 in the direction of Val Pellice. When you go beyond Luserna San Giovanni, take the roundabout in Via Masel. Go through Strada del Ciabas until you reach the fork and take the road on the right towards Località Malan Superiori. Proceed for about 10kms until you reach Rifugio Jumarre.
Here you’ll have to leave your car and walk on the unpaved road near there following the directions to “Alpeggi Infernet, Sourian, Crëvlira”. After 20 minutes, following the road which passes over Bagnou hamlet, you’ll see the Peirun above you. There’s no path to reach it, so if you want to take the risk and climb the hill, you’ll have to be very cautious!
